Hand Cut Dovetails (2) Day Class

Instructor: David Fleming

Tuition: $160
Registration Closes: June 28, 2017.
Materials included.

Dovetails remain the non pariel method of joining wood in the construction of boxes, drawers and cabinet carcases in solid wood. Hand-cut dovetails, to many, represent the epitome of the craft.

This workshop is offered as a one-day or two-day session – sign up for one or both days. A one-day experience will serve as an introduction to the topic — covering how to fine-tune the tools and the layout, sawing, chopping and paring of through dovetails — while two days of concentrated study and practice will take you deeper into the skills and the making of half-blind dovetails, if you choose.

Joinery Basics (3) Day Class

Instructor: McCaslin

Tuition: $739
Registration Closes: Two weeks before class begins.
Materials included.

As anyone who has ever built a piece of furniture knows that the weakest link is the joinery. Although we teach joinery in the Fundamentals courses these courses are too brief and broad based to go into an in depth study of the many joints that are used.

The student really needs a more concentrated and focused exposure to making the various joints. Repetition is a key to building and retaining the skill. There are many considerations to making joints; the most important is to choose the right joint for the right application. Layout is critical to accurately cutting the joinery.

In addition it is good to know which glues to use and just as important is sharp tools to cut the joint. We will concentrate on the mortise and tenon (various), through dovetails, half blind dovetails, bridal joints, lapped dovetails, and the half lap.
